One source of truth: data platform and governance at Porter and Zepto
Central Data Product at Porter and company-wide governance at Zepto: a single source of truth, with access controls, catalogue and a 40% gain in data accuracy.
- Data accuracy (Zepto)
- +40%
- Source of truth across all business lines (Porter)
- 1
What
Two platform and governance programs, at two companies, with the same aim: one trusted version of the data. At Porter I architected the Central Data Product, a unified warehouse and governance layer spanning all business lines. At Zepto I implemented data governance and catalogue standards company-wide.
Why
In hyper-growth companies, data grows faster than the rules around it. Without governance, teams build their own tables and metrics, accuracy suffers, and sensitive data spreads without control.
How
- Central Data Product (Porter). One warehouse and governance layer for all business lines, the base for enterprise reporting and the Metric Store.
- Governance and privacy (Porter). Org-wide governance, a data catalogue, and privacy and security standards: access controls, PII masking, metadata discovery and audit trails.
- Governance and catalogue (Zepto). Company-wide standards, alongside a BI platform that became the single source of truth (see BI at scale).
Who
Porter: Senior Analytics Manager, partnering with Data Engineering to own analytical data products. Zepto: Senior Data Officer, leading a 26-member analytics team.
When
Zepto, Nov 2021 – Sep 2023. Porter, Sep 2023 to present.
Result
At Zepto, data accuracy improved by 40%. At Porter, every business line reports from one governed layer, which is what makes self-serve and AI-native analytics possible.
